The Golden-Salmon
(Black-red) and Silver-salmon varieties
(genetic family e+)

Coq Marans Saumon-doré

  Marans Saumon-doré Marans Saumon-doré

This Marans color, which is to date not recognized by the standard, is still very rare.

The present founders which are well known by the French Marans-Club show outstanding plumage as well as egg color qualities.

However, other serioous flaws exist notably as for the subject insuffucient weight or their mass for which a very steedy selection is essential.

The Golden-salmon Marans corresponds to the color kind of the salmon breast gallinaceans which are at the origin of our present domestic poultries, as it happens the original Bankiva breed. To give a more concreat example, it also corresponds to our French golden gaul (Gauloise Dorée).

The genetic factor responsible for this plumage is written (e+).It is accompanied by the presence of recessive golden (s+) gene to give this Golden-salmon  variety  that is (e+/e+, s+/s+) and (e+/e+, s+/- for the hens).

On the other hand when the savage (e+) color is accompanied by the complementary "silver" (S) factor dominating gene and linked to sex (remember that this gene is frequent for the Marans), we obtain the Silver-salmon variety i.e (e+/e+, S/S) and (e+/e+,S/- ) for the hens.

and its little sister:

the Silver-salmon Marans

Consequently, we can understand that this Silver-salmon variety  which is genetically coherent in the Marans (since this gene is widely present in the breed) can perfectly he homologated to the Marans standard when the time has come.

So, this nice variety, that we well know under the Silver Ardenaise features, can consequently be recreated from the currently existing breeding stick livestock that is the Golden-salmon with Silver-black subjects for example (Birchen). This very useful last variety, eventhough it is still very rare, is however more and more fashionable.

The Silver-salmon color must in every respect be similar to the Golden-salmon  color except for the different  golden or coppery parts which are totally wided out by the (S) gene for a nice silver-white color on the hen head and hackles and on the cock shoulders, back lancets and mirors.

However, the hen breast remain "salmon reddish-brown" like in the Golden variety.

Here are the details : the Marans breast, hackle, back are Silver-salmon. On the other hand, in the golden salmon variety, only the hackle is golden-fawn colored instead of being silver-white colored like here. The breast is unvariably russet for the varieties. Moreover, the back and the rest of the body still have this brown shade with blackest filigrees.

Description of the golden-salmon Marans

The cock :

The Golden-salmon cock plumage is very different of the hen's which correspond to it.
It is close (and reasonnably !) to the Brown-red plumage but it is especially very similar to the froment cock's. It also has a coppery finery on a black plumage background to which is added a citananon-fawn colored wing miror and not the black miror of the Brown-red variety.

The breast must be black with a duller black abdomen. The hackles and the lancets ate coppery colored with variable tonalities (from orangery to golden-coppery shades) and possibly bordered or not with black flames.

The back and the small of the back are auburn-red colored with dark and velvet red shoulders. The miror is of course fawn or chinanon brown colored and made up of folded wing secondary remexs. The tails is black, the primary remexs are pure and black and they make the armband.

Other characteristic : the cock has on the tail base on the rump, a tuft of ash-gray downy feathers.

The eyes are orangery-red.

The hen:

The hackle is light golden colored with black tips on a salmon reddish-brown breast. This latter color is close to the gray tone around the belly underside and the tail and close to ruddish tones on the thighs.

Be careful : this salmon color of the breast is a fundamental identification mark of this genetic variety. It gives its name to the variety and allows to avoid all confusion with the real genetic "partridge" variety  which never owns the least salmon tonality and which moreover seems not to exist in the Marans.

The coat is blackishbrown colored ( a color which is quite similar to the genetic partridge subject's), made up of a fine and blackish filigree on the feathers.

The coat shows a general warmer and brown tonality whereas that for the real "partridges", their shades have a quite colder and darker tonality. Moreover, it spreads out to the whole breast which is never reddish-brown colored.

The wing remexs as well as the tail candals are also blackish-brown with little brown dots.

The eyes are orangery-red.

This color is particular in that the hen breast are reddish-brown when they belong to the other silver variety : the silver-salmon.It's matter of a fundamental characteristic of this genetic golden-salmon color.

The characteristic, responsible for the presence of this salmon reddish-brown breast in the Silver-salmon and Golden-salmon  varieties, prove itself to be insensible to the powerwul action of the silver (S) gene which, present on the only Silver-salmon variety, totally thins all the coppery and golden marks of the golden-salmon plumage but never the salmon reddish-brown breast characteristic, which remains unvariable.

On the other hand, the real genetic "partridge" variety is a mutation which should not be confused. It comes from another genetic family completly different from the Silver and Golden families.
